day two of joe’s visit (this post was… postponed because i have more pictures to scan to add to it but i am obviously taking forever so those will come later): san antonio!

in the morning, we remembered the alamo. and marveled at their wonderful tree. and bought socks.

we then tried to go to the mercado and have lunch and check out all the wonderful shops, but there was a festival going on and it was crazytown. so, we ate delicious and speedy mexican food on the riverwalk.

after the riverwalk, it was time for an extended tour at barney smith’s toilet seat art museum! joe got to sign the georgia seat, and i got to sign the librarian one (i didn’t try to explain that i was actually an archivist). if you are ever in san antonio you need to go see barney, because he will give you a two hour long tour and tell you all about his awesome art and the people who come to visit him. the cutest.

we had talked about going to the zoo, but we spent a long time with barney and missed their open hours. before we went home, exhausted, we made a pit stop at the mall to try on a giant pair of cowboy boots.

day two of joe’s visit: austin!

-we checked out an art mini golf course at laugna gloria/the austin museum of art with geoff and kristine. the holes were all designed by artists (and therefore maybe a bit of a PITA to finish), and the grounds were absolutely beautiful. i’m glad we got to go check this out! and on such a beautiful day!

-after we tried to visit the museum of ephemerata and no one was home (gotta go back again!), we went to g & k’s and sampled some delicious homebrewed beer and ate some dang tasty tacos.

-we also checked out the flagship whole foods. holy smokes, it is a crazy place!

-after sundown, we sat under the bridge at congress street and watched something like a billion bats come out to feed for the night! we didn’t even get pooped on.

-we then went to green mesquite and stuffed our faces with bbq and beer while listening to sweet rock and roll covers inside their courtyard.

an A+ day all around.

day one of joe’s visit to the hill country! goats (of course), grocery store mexicans, and the world’s heaviest slice of chocolate cake.

sometimes, it is just too beautiful outside to sit in the basement and edit finding aids.

i’m behind on posting again/always. alex came to visit all the way from california (by way of houston) so we visited the baby goats and learned how to rope like cowpokes (sort of). we also got to eat delicious roadside bbq. welcome to the hill country!

on easter, after outdoor church at the park and a roping demo from a “christian cowboy”, my mom and i drove the willow city loop. i thought it was beautiful back in march, but now the flowers are just having the time of their lives! (literally). it is absolutely stunning. but don’t think that flowers are boring! oh no! every beautiful flower is a death trap! snaaaakes!

anyway i am glad i got to see it at the height of wildflower season. the hill country is amazing this time of year!

the most terrifying drive of my life.

the most terrifying drive of my life.

i volunteered at the LBJ 100 bike tour at the park in march. i mostly did things like wear a neon vest and wave traffic along, but it was still fun and a beautiful day! people are crazy - the bike routes ranged from 10 miles to 85 miles. luci baines johnson (LBJ’s daughter) gave a bike tour of the ranch/historic sites, and i got to crash the tail end of that. it was interesting to hear her talk about her father and living at the texas white house. she’s a character herself.

the first photo is of luci’s bike entourage passing the park superintendent in one of LBJ’s sweet rides. the second shows luci talking about her father and the vietnam war under the big trees at the johnson family cemetery.
